Daily Football Analysis Carling Cup December 1st 2009

Good Morning Folks!
The quarter finals of Carling Cup start today, with two great games: Portsmouth v Aston Villa and Manchester United v Tottenham. Now because of the tournament rules, and the fact that the teams play only one game, it’s pretty hard to predict the outcome of the games.
Looking over the statistics of the first game, things doesn’t look good for Portsmouth. So far they are last in Premier League, and have to do everything possible to move from that spot if they want to be playing next year in Premier League as well. Boss Avram Grant said that they want to win Carling Cup, but do they really stand a chance against villa? Aston Villa is the 2nd team after Liverpool with most won Carling Cup trophies (5).
They are in a great shape 6th so far in the table. If you had the chance to see their game against Tottenham, you would have noticed the great shape of the team. Although the game can go either way,I will go with the logic here and pick an away victory for Aston Villa.
The more interesting and anticipated game perhaps tonight is Manchester United v Tottenham. What’s funny about the red devils is that they are not among the top 5 teams that have the most Carling Cup trophies. I find that strangely odd, but I guess they never cared about the Cup anyways. Speaking of caring, Sir Alex Ferguson will give another chance to the youngsters against Tottenham tonight.
They were pretty criticized after the loss at home against the team of Besiktas, but according to Fergie it’s a matter of experience not skills. On the other hand Tottenham has 4 won Carling Cup finals and their shape this year is incredible. If they come out tonight with their original team against the Man. United youngsters I am pretty sure the game will end in their favor.
Here’s a fun fact though, United has played against Tottenham twice for FA cup and won both times, and in the past 8 years both teams have played 20 games, and Tottenham has never ever won against United! How’s that for a statistic! So as you can see the challenge for Tottenham is pretty huge! Can they actually get their first victory? Even though stats are against the Spurs I will go with them and pick an away victory for Tottenham.
