While Aston Villa has a chance to finish this season on the 9th spot, Liverpool would be fighting for a greater cause, a place for Europa League, next season

Aston Villa

The team currently takes the 13th position with 45 points from 37 matches. Home record reads W7 D7 L4, scoring 25 goals and conceding 19. Two victories, two draws and a loss in the last 5 fixtures at home. Since Martin O’Neil left Villa hasn’t been able to do much, unlike the previous seasons. The highest the team can finish this year, would be the 9th spot, if they manage to win on Sunday. One successful transfer in January, which really helped them out, striker Darren Bent, who was able to become the team’s top scorer for less than 4 months(since January).

Liverpool

Liverpool currently takes the 6th spot with 58 points in 37 matches. The team’s away record reads W5 D3 L10, scoring 22 goals and conceding 29 in those games. It’s impressive, that the goal difference is only -7 goals, although Liverpool has lost as twice as many games as they have won. The last fixture on Anfield against Tottenham was a direct battle for the 5th spot and a place for Europa League. Although Liverpool still has a chance of getting it, the team must hope that Tottenham will draw or lose against Birmingham on White Hart Lane. On top of that Liverpool has to win this game as well.

Prediction

Overwhelming statistics on Villa Park Stadium, in favor of Liverpool. The team’s record reads W9 D5 L4 in all competitions against Aston Villa since 1994. Villa’s last victory here was 13 years ago, in 1998 with 2:1. Since then, the team has recorded 8 losses and 5 draws.

While Aston Villa needs nothing out of this game, will be neat if they manage to finish the season with a victory and a place in the upper half of the table.

Liverpool on the other hand, have a last shot at the fifth spot. The team must hope that Tottenham trips on Birmingham, while they grab the victory here. Of course there’s another scenario which is a bit unlikely, but if Tottenham loses, and Liverpool draws here, the team will still move up on the 5th spot.

While not participating in European tournaments next season, gives a few benefits, like less games, I doubt this is what Liverpool is looking for. I am sure Kenny Dalglish and his boys will do what it needs to be done on Villa Park and hope for the best.

My prediction, a victory for Liverpool. Good luck betting.
