After their victory against Rosenborg with 4:0, Leverkusen is taking the 1st spot in Group B, while last year’s winner of Europa League Atletico, is currently 3rd with 0 points after a loss in Greece against Aris.
Now, the Spanish team will need a bounce back victory to keep all chances to make it out of the group. Both teams have never met each other, but have plenty of games against teams from the same country.
Atlético’s record in 28 games against German sides reads W13 D4 L11 (W8 D1 L3 in Madrid), while Leverkusen’s 19 games against Spanish sides ended W6 D3 L10 (W2 D1 L6 in Spain).
Here’s a bit of info about both teams and their performance in Europe:
* Atlético have not lost in five European home games since a 3-0 reverse against FC Porto in last season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. Their unbeaten run at home in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League stands at 14 games and dates back to a 3-1 semi-final loss to Parma FC on 6 April 1999.
* Leverkusen have lost just one of their last five European away fixtures, 3-2 at Hamburger SV in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16. However, they have won only once in four previous UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League group stage fixtures on their travels, beating FC Zürich 5-0 in that same edition of the competition.
Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes knows plenty about Spanish football, since he used to be the coach of Real Madrid, Tenerife and Athletic Club. This will be his first challenge against a Spanish team, on the lead of Leverkusen.
The Betting Verdict?
Atletico Madrid to win @ 1.97 (The highest odds on the net! Register at Betfair.com – 25£ bonus): Although this is a 3-way game, I believe that Atletico will go for the victory here to be able to bounce back near the top of the group, especially if Aris takes another 3 points tonight as well.
