Evil Geniuses is an American multi-gaming champion organization. EG has rosters that represent nine disciplines including Dota 2, CSGO, and League of Legends. EG’s brand was started in the 2010s, at the very beginning of the industry. Let us walk you through the history of EG’s Dota division.
First Appearance
EG was first mentioned in 2011, however, Evil Geniuses started to play actively in 2012. The first roster was made up by international players:
- Maelk
- DeMoN
- MiSeRy
- Fear
- Lacoste
However, this roster was not doomed to conquer the top of the competitive stage. In 2012, the team was going through changes. At first, the roster lost Lacoste and MiSeRy, shortly after that DeMon got benched. The spots of the gamers were taken by BuLba and UNiVeRsE whereas DeMoN returned to the roster.
These were the gamers that represented Evil Geniuses at the main championship of the year – The International 2012. The team took 9-12 place at the championship and it was a rather good outcome due to the fact that almost nobody expected them to show anything better.
But the result did not satisfy the team and the roster fell apart. In 2013, EG tried to find their gaming style and an optimal roster. That was the year when the gamers missed The International 2013. Starting from 2012, it was the only year that Evil Geniuses did not participate in the tournament.
The team started to gather pace at the beginning of 2014.
Formation of Grands
In 2014, EG’s roster was changed. The roster looked in the following way:
- Fera
- Arteezy
- UNiVeRsE
- zai
- ppd
EG started to win. In March 2014, the team took first place at Monster Energy Invitational, and later the second place at Netolic Pro League #5 West.
In April, EG won MLG T.K.O. America and JoinDOTA League Season 1 America, and also the qualifiers for Starladder StarSeries Season 9.
The team won third place At StarLadder. In May, EG won ESL One Frankfurt – American Qualifiers and The Summit 1 American Qualifiers.
We cannot ignore the fact that since StarLadder StarSeries Season 9 EG’s leader Fear was substituted due to an injury to his hand. At first, he was substituted by EternalEnvy, and later mason.
mason helped the team to win The Summit #1 and HyperX D2L Western Challenge, and also take second place at ESL One Frankfurt 2014.
Fear was absent at The International 2014 as well. Despite substitution, the team managed to take third place which surpassed any expectations of their fans.
However an outstanding result has never been a reason for keeping a roster. This was what happened to EG who went through numerous reshuffles after their performance at TI4.
EG’s Championship
The changes did not happen immediately. Fear returned to his position and the team continued playing at international championships.
In October 2014, the team won StarLadder StarSeries Season 10. But before that the team had taken second place at ESL One New York 2014. Later EG took first place at DreamLeague Season 2.
In December 2014, EG took fourth position at The Summit 2 and 3-4 place at Dota Pit League Season 2. It was the last tournament for the roster.
In January 2015, EG lost zai and Arteezy, and their spots were taken by SumaiL and UNiVeRsE. This roster won third place at Dota 2 League Season 5.
In Feburary 2015, EG sensationally won Dota 2 Asia Championships 2015. Later the team took second place at several major championships: JoinDOTA MLG Pro League Season 1, The Summit 3, and ESL One Frankfurt 2015.
In July 2015, EG won Dota Pit League Season 3, and there was another challenge for the team – participation in The International 2015.
EG were approaching the main tournament of the year as one of favourites. The players were rather optimistic about the event and ppd even hurries to call EG winners. Peter’s prediction came true on 8 August 2015 when Echo Slam at UNiVeRsE got a victory for EG at the final against CDEC. EG were the first North American team that had ever won The International.
Post-TI Period
Right after The International 2015, the roster expelled Aui_2000 who made a huge contribution to the victory at TI. His spot was taken by Arteezy who again became an Evil Genius. The following year brought EG constant reshuffles.
After several championships the roster again went through staff turnover. In March, Arteezy and UNiVeRsE left EG and their spots were taken by BuLba and Aui_2000. In June, BuLba left the roster and moved to Team Secret. Actually, there was an exchange as UNiVeRsE, who had left for TS in March, returned to EG.
In the same month, zai again played for the team and aui_2000 turned out unnecessary for the second time. Surprisingly, EG took third place at The International 2016 EG despite constant changes in the roster.
However, even the third place in 2016 after the first one in 2015 did not help EG keep the roster. After TI, ppd left the team and in September Fear finished his career as a professional player.
In September, EG announced the roster for the following season. There was Arteezy, SumaiL, UNiVeRsE, zai, and Cr1t-.
All the next season was pretty good for EG. The team took 3-4 place at The Boston Major 2016, The Kiev Major 2017, won The Manila Masters and took second place at EPICENTER 2017. However, the series of good performances was darkened by 9-12 place at The International 2017.
After the performance at TI, Zai left the team and in December his spot was taken by MISERY.
In 2018 EG could not find their game and eventually it led the gamers to other changes. Fear and Misery left the roster and their spots were taken by s4 and Fly.
TI 2018 and After
At TI 2018, EG played out in fresh colours. The team succeeded until the second round of the playoff bracket where they got sensationally beaten by OG.
In the lower bracket, EG dealt with VP, and later kicked the champions of the previous year, Liquid, out of the tournament. However, Evil Geniuses were unable to win a revenge match from OG as they lost to PSG.LGD who had kicked the Americans out of the event.
At TI8, EG took third place that would be accompanying them all the following season.
In 2019, EG was an undoubtedly stable strong team. The gamers took third place at almost all Major tournaments of the season: The Kuala Lumpur Major, The Chongqing Major, MDL Disneyland Paris Major. Only DreamLeague Season 11 and EPICENTER Major 2019 were exceptions there: EG took 7-8 and 13-16 place correspondingly.
However, good performances could not help EG at TI 2019 where the team took 5-6 place.
In September 2019, s4 and SumaiL moved out of the team leaving their spots for Abed and RAMZES666.
2020
2020 started positively for EG: the team took second place at DreamLeague Season 13 but when the coronavirus pandemic started, the situation worsened.
The team kept on winning at local championships, however, the region could not let the team participate in events on the international arena.
The last tournament before another replacement was OMEGA League: Europe Immortal Division where the team took 5-6 place. In November, the team lost RAMZES666 and his iceiceice took over his position.
The Organization and Grabs
The manager of the team is Fronz, the coach of the Dota 2 roster is BuLba, and the captain's position is taken by fly. EG collaborate with different big firms like Monster Energy, Razer, LG Ultra Gear, America’s Navy, Motorola, Secretlab, Twitch, and PEAK6.
Since the moment of starting the Dota roster, the gamers have already won over 20,000,000 of grabs.
