Perhaps the most anticipated of the round, saved for last on Monday April 11th 2011, between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Liverpool improved their game, since Kenny Dalglish took the post manager, and after the two successful transfers Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. The team got rid of Fernando Torres for the price of 50 millions pounds, perhaps the best deal every done by Liverpool, since the striker is far from its best shape, something we can all witness even right now when he plays for Chelsea.
Liverpool are currently 6th with 45 points in 31 games, home record of W9 D4 L2 scoring 26 goals and conceding 12 in those games. The team is 11 points away from the 4th spot, which ironically is held from Manchester City. A possible victory here will bring the difference down to 8 points, but will most likely give Tottenham a shot at that spot, as 11 points difference and 7 rounds left in the season, seems a bit hard to catch up.
Manchester City are currently 4th as I mentioned above, having 56 points in 31 games, an away record of W6 D4 L5, scoring 22 goals and conceding 16 in those games.
The team hasn’t won an away game for the new 2011, as the last away victory of Manchester City dates, Boxing day in 2010 against Newcastle with 3:1. If we consider Liverpool as part of the so called Top 4, it will be the 3rd team that Manchester City visits in the last 3 away games. The team lost the first 2 visits against Manchester United and Chelsea, with 2:1 and 2:0.
The last 5 games between both teams on Anfield:
21/11/2009 Liverpool vs. Man City 2:2
22/02/2009 Liverpool vs. Man City 1:1
04/05/2008 Liverpool vs. Man City 1:0
25/11/2006 Liverpool vs. Man City 1:0
26/02/2006 Liverpool vs. Man City 1:0
Perhaps the biggest news for Liverpool is that captain Steven Gerrard is out for the rest of the season.
However I am willing to back Liverpool in this game, although their success has been mixed. What I have noticed is that Liverpool plays well against the top 6 teams, than against the any of the team in the bottom half of the table. After the disappointing draw against Wigan, the team would want to bounce back with a victory especially after beating Manchester United the last round. City is a club with a lot of money and potential, but at the moment the team seems more like fine individuals who play together. The team work is missing, although Carlos Tevez is brilliant as usual. I am expecting Liverpool to do what they did against Manchester United and grab the 3 points here. Good luck betting.
