As the season comes to its end, this is the game we have all been expecting that will most likely determine the title. Manchester needs at least a draw, Chelsea needs a victory
This is an outdated preview. For the latest one, please visit Manchester United v Chelsea September 18th 2011
Manchester United
Manchester United is still the leader in Premiership with 73 points, in 35 games. Home record reads W16 D1 L0, scoring 43 goals in those games and conceding only 9. The team remains the only unbeaten team at home, so far in the season. A victory here against Chelsea, will mean that United will get the title a round before the season ends if they achieve a draw or better in their next match. Since the draw on October 16th 2010, against West Bromwich, United has recorded 13 consecutive victories in Premier League at home on Old Trafford.
Chelsea
Chelsea started the season very well, leading the table with a good difference, but somewhere around November the team went down and was taking the 5th place at one point. However at the moment Chelsea are second with 70 points in 35 games. Their away record reads W7 D5 L5, scoring 29 goals and conceding 17 in those games, picking up 26 points (the second best visitor after Arsenal). In their 7 most recent away games Chelsea recorded 4 victories, 2 draws and a loss. Let’s not forget that Chelsea met United on Old Trafford for Champions league and lost 1:2 just some 3 weeks ago.
Prediction
Manchester United already beat Chelsea on Old Trafford this year, winning with 2:1 in the quarter-finals of Champions League. The stakes here are just as big as in the previous match. A victory for Manchester United here would mean 6 points difference and a chance to grab the title in the next Premier League round. A victory for Chelsea would mean top spot with equal points but a better goal difference.
The draw would of course favor Manchester United, as they will keep the 3 point difference and happily continue the season. Let’s not forget that the Red Devils have a Champions League final on May 28th, the preview for which you can read here.
Sir Alex was watching closely the last match of Tottenham and Chelsea. Although the Blues won there, it was with a great dose of chance. My prediction for this game would be a victory Manchester United. The team will try to put an end to the battle for the title in this game and focus on the upcoming final. With a victory over Chelsea 3 weeks ago, I think we can’t really see anything different here. Not enough time for any of both teams to change anything and surprise.
The only difference would be that David Luiz will play here, as he didn’t have permission to play in Champions League( Played for Benfica already).
This will be a great match, the most offensive team in the league Manchester United, will face the best defensive team in the league Chelsea.
