Prior to that Wigan’s last win had come back in August. The win moved them off the bottom of the table and it will be interesting to see if it can kick start the season.

One could argue that they beat a Sunderland side who have been free fall, a fact which was reflected in the sacking of their manager Steve Bruce.

They face a difficult encounter against an Arsenal team who have been in very good form in the past month after having a poor start to the season. Arsene Wenger’s side have racked up five straight wins since losing the North London derby to Tottenham at the start of October.

The winning run came to a halt last week when Gunners were held to a draw at the Emirates against Fulham. Much of their good recent form has been due to the goal scoring exploits of Robin Van Persie who is the league’s leading striker with 13 goals.

Arsenal usually find it difficult to win away from home against mid table sides who take a physical approach to the game. Wigan aren’t one of those sides as Martinez likes to play a passing game and is a believer in the Wenger style of football.

Such an approach of trying to play a passing game will prove difficult against Arsenal who are one of the best sides in the league and fast passing play. Wigan’s win over Sunderland will give them a massive lift so expect an entertaining game.
